The current standard treatment for food allergy is strict avoidance of the allergenic food and prescription of epinephrine to be carried at all times in the event of exposure. Excitingly, current research has provided food allergic people with new treatment options! One of these such options is called Food Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT).
During SLIT, the threshold for which an allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) would occur is increased, providing the person with protection in the case of accidental ingestion of the allergenic food. This process may allow a person to tolerate the allergenic food in very small quantities leading to a “bite-proof” state. Having “bite-proof” protection is a sigh of relief to parents of children with food allergy as well as teenagers and adults that live day to day with a food allergy.
Successful treatment with a SLIT program requires commitment and compliance. Inducing a change in the immune system (becoming “bite-proof”) takes time and consistency. Food SLIT will require daily dosing of a very small amount (drops) of the allergenic food placed underneath the tongue.
The best way to be successful with a SLIT program is to create a new daily habit of taking your SLIT drops. Building a new habit is often challenging but not impossible. You might try habit stacking, pairing a new habit with an already established daily habit can make it easier to stay consistent. Your effort will be worth it!
